Flying with Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: How to Prevent Ear Pain on Planes

Writer's picture: Madeleine HermanMadeleine Herman

If you've ever experienced ear pain, pressure, or muffled hearing during a flight, you're not alone. For those with Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD), air travel can be particularly uncomfortable. But don’t worry—there are ways to prevent and manage these symptoms so you can fly with ease.

What is Eustachian Tube Dysfunction?

Your Eustachian tubes are small passages that connect the middle ear to the back of your throat. They help regulate pressure and drain fluids from the ear. When these tubes don’t function properly—due to congestion, allergies, sinus infections, or other conditions—it can lead to discomfort, especially during air travel when pressure changes rapidly.

Why Does ETD Get Worse on Airplanes?

During takeoff and landing, the air pressure changes quickly, creating an imbalance between the pressure inside and outside your ear. Normally, your Eustachian tubes adjust to equalize this pressure. But if they're blocked or inflamed, that adjustment doesn’t happen smoothly, leading to:✔ Ear pain or discomfort✔ Muffled hearing✔ A feeling of fullness in the ears✔ Popping or crackling sounds

How to Prevent Ear Pain When Flying with ETD

The good news? There are several ways to reduce ear discomfort and protect your hearing when flying:

✈️ Chew gum or suck on candy – This encourages swallowing, which helps open the Eustachian tubes.

✈️ Use nasal sprays or decongestants – Afrin (oxymetazoline) spray or over-the-counter decongestant can help reduce nasal and sinus congestion before your flight. (Consult with your doctor first.)

✈️ Avoid flying when sick – If you have a cold, sinus infection, or severe allergies, your ETD symptoms may be worse. If possible, consider postponing your trip.

When to See an ENT Specialist

If you experience persistent ear pain, chronic ETD symptoms, or hearing issues that don’t improve, it’s time to consult an ENT specialist. We offer treatments to help keep your Eustachian tubes functioning properly, so you can fly comfortably and live without ear discomfort.
